Museum Education Specialist;
Position Summary
Works in collaboration with the Director of Education on the development, implementation, evaluation and promotion of the Museum’s education programs for schools, youth groups, and adults. Develops curriculum, didactic, and interpretive materials to support programming and in-gallery learning. Provides supervision of the Interpreter team and collaborates with staff across departments to ensure that the Museum meets its mission through engaging programming.
Specific Responsibilities
Programs
· Ensure that the content of all education programs remains relevant to targeted audiences, meets, or exceeds established standards, supports Museum goals, and promotes enthusiasm and interest in American history, specifically the Gilded Age and Progressive era, and Civics centric programming.
· Maintain, develop, promote, implement, and evaluate curricula for Museum school programs both on and off-site to ensure they meet the needs of teachers and students, facilitate inquiry-based learning, and correlate to current science standards.
· Develop, promote, implement, and evaluate teacher professional development programs.
· Develop, promote and implement digital classroom programming.
· Maintain, develop, promote, implement, and evaluate a full roster of youth and adult education programs.
General
· Attend and support Museum special events as needed – including evening and weekend events.
· Maintain program spaces, manage supply orders and organization and prepare materials for programs.
· Schedule and maintain a database of school group visits.
· Management of Interpretive & Volunteer staff
· Assist with other Museum duties as assigned by the Director of Education.
Tracks
A) Public Programing: Experience in Adult and General Public Programs. Focus on developing, training and implementing Public programs and series
B) Agricultural Programs: Experience with Animal husbandry, agricultural program development. Focus on animal care, agricultural activities, developing education around the two for schools and public programs.
C) Digital: Experience with digital development, video production, and website management. Focus on developing educational digital programming as well as support the management of the museum's digital footprint
Qualifications
· Background in history or museum education or related (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required) Master’s degree preferred.
· Museum experience strongly preferred
· Minimum of 2 years of experience developing, leading and/or evaluating informal educational programs for children, particularly history programs in a museum setting
· Demonstrated experience creating and implementing standards-aligned programming for K-6 students and educators
· Minimum of 2 years supervising educators, naturalists and/or volunteers
· Excellent organizational and leadership skills with proven track record as an effective team leader
· Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
· Self-motivated, creative, resourceful, and outgoing
· Ability to interact with a variety of different groups
· Bilingual fluency, written and oral, a plus
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, web-based software (e.g., Google Suite), Canva, and willingness to learn new programs as necessary

Museum Village of Old Smith’s Clove | Monroe, New York
Three-Month Paid Internship | Potential for Permanent Employment
Museum Village of Old Smith’s Clove is seeking motivated individuals interested in beginning or advancing a career in museums, public history, education, nonprofit administration, or cultural organizations.
We are offering paid, three-month internships in several areas of museum operations. These positions are designed to provide meaningful, hands-on professional experience rather than observation alone. Interns will work directly with Museum Village staff, participate in active projects, and gain practical experience in the day-to-day operation of a historic museum and nonprofit organization.
Successful interns may be considered for full-time, permanent positions at Museum Village at the conclusion of the three-month internship, based on performance, organizational needs, and available positions.
Internship Areas
Collections & Curation
Interns will gain experience in the care, documentation, research, interpretation, and presentation of Museum Village’s collection and historic resources. Depending on current projects, responsibilities may include:
- Collections cataloging and documentation
- Artifact research
- Collections storage and organization
- Exhibit research and development
- Writing and editing exhibit labels and interpretive materials
- Assisting with exhibition installation and deinstallation
- Historical and archival research
- Supporting collections care and preservation projects
This track is particularly appropriate for candidates interested in museum studies, history, public history, material culture, archives, anthropology, art history, or collections management.
Education & Programs
Education and Programs interns will help Museum Village develop and deliver engaging experiences for school groups, families, and the general public. Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with school field trips and educational programs
- Developing hands-on activities and teaching materials
- Researching and developing new programs
- Supporting public programs, demonstrations, and special events
- Working with historic buildings, objects, and interpretive spaces
- Assisting with program evaluation and improvement
- Helping translate historical research into accessible public interpretation
This track is well suited for candidates interested in education, history, public history, museum education, interpretation, childhood education, or community programming.
Administration & Marketing
Administration and Marketing interns will gain experience in the business, communications, and nonprofit-management side of museum operations. Responsibilities may include:
- Social media content and scheduling
- Marketing and promotional projects
- Event planning and coordination
- Community outreach
- Website and digital content
- Membership and donor communications
- Grant and sponsorship research
- Visitor engagement initiatives
- General nonprofit and museum administration
This track is appropriate for candidates interested in marketing, communications, business, nonprofit management, public relations, hospitality, event management, or arts and cultural administration.

Seasonal Interpreter:
Job description
At Museum Village, a Seasonal Interpreter engages and educates our visiting audience. S/he uses historic clothing, structures, plants, animals, and landscape as well as the tools and techniques of early trades, agriculture, horticulture and domestic crafts to make meaningful connections with the present. Historical Interpreters help visitors gain insights into their modern world and a better understanding of it by conveying aspects of its origins in the last quarter of the 19th Century.
Qualifications
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and self-motivation skills required
• Background in history, museum education, or performing arts helpful but not required
• Candidates must possess and maintain a positive professional appearance and demeanor
• Must be at least 16 years old
Responsibilities
- Knowledge of learning styles and ability to work with people of varying ages and skills
- Learning the Interpretive programming and presenting it consistently
- If a demonstrator; the ability to adequately communicate and demonstrate the craft or activity
- ability to lift heavy objects and walk multiple miles during a shift
- Assisting with front desk duties and gift shop sales
- Routine cleaning and light maintenance of the museum buildings, galleries, reproduction clothing and equipment
- Ability to be on feet for long periods of time and able to lift heavy objects.
